“Growing up I never had to worry about being in shape or worry about what I was eating. I’ve always been active from a small age into my college years. Playing sports defined who I was (because there wasn’t much else to do in a small town) and I have nothing but great memories from playing all those years. With that being said, I played sports in high school and played colligate volleyball and softball. Everyone always talks bout gaining the freshman 15 once they head off into college, but still being active with volleyball I maintained my weight.
I moved to Oklahoma to finish school and continue to play a sport I absolutely love, volleyball. After two years of living in Oklahoma, I graduated with my degree in Exercise Science and needed a new adventure in life, and that lead me down to Florida.
This is the part of my story that goes downhill and I never got back up that hill until recently. I was living in Florida, working at the most magical place on earth, you guessed it, I was working at Disney World! This was supposed to be the best time of my life! I was done with school finally; I was living in the sunshine state and working where everyone came to get away from life stresses. I quickly got out of the routine I was adjusted to all my life, to now working a 4:30 pm to 1 am shift. I quickly changed my eating habits to eating late at night and also eating whatever I thought I could consume. I went from being very active to never working out, and never having any energy.
I left Disney after about 10 months, and in June I became a flight attendant. I was living in Chicago by July of 2013. With this job, the unknown is part of what you sign up for and by beginning of November I left Chicago and was based in Denver for a few months. By February of 2014 I was living in Kansas City. I was constantly gone, and never making friends in the KC area. Food quickly became a comfort for me, eating “just because” I was bored. Having no motivation to do anything was at an all time high.
At the end of September, my friends decided they wanted to go on a cruise, so a week of being away from work and being in the sun was just what we all needed. Once back from the cruise, one day in October, we were going through pictures and I ran across a picture of myself in my bathing suit. I was so embarrassed because that was not someone I knew and I didn’t even recognize the person in the photo. I knew I had gained weight, but I didn’t know how much and that picture was the end of it for me.
I had seen transformation photos on Facebook, because as I mentioned before I played volleyball growing up. Daily, there was something on Facebook or Instagram about these transformations. I would always look at the before and after pictures and I thought to myself, “ I want to be one of those stories” but I never really acted on it. Until one day in November. I was reading a story and I thought to myself that was it. I’m tired of trying fad diets, cleanses or quick fixes that I had been seeing. I had reached out to Mica and she directed me to Kali, who is at the Overland Park location and before I knew it I had a consultation with her. I was hesitant at first, because I was very nervous and I thought I was going to be judged. Someone who has a degree in Exercise Science, a past collegiate athlete, you would think that I would have no problem exercising or eating healthy, right?
I also was a little naive and I thought I was just going to be working out with Kali, and not on my own. (Boy was I wrong). She told me if I was going to do it, I had to commit 100% and I was hesitant because of my work schedule but I knew I was in there for a reason, and the reason was to come out with a better after picture and to gain confidence back. At the end of that day, I had signed up for a gym membership at 24hr fitness and I haven’t looked back.
Kali was very flexible with my schedule because I didn’t have a set Monday- Friday 8-5 job. I would be available on different days and times of the week and she was nothing but accommodating. Kali would make workouts that I could do at 24hour, or a hotel gym that had limited selection. Traveling with my food was another challenge, because eating airport food is easily accessible, but not always the healthiest or cheapest. So I cut out that option from my life and I became a pro at packing chicken, vegetables and my protein powder in baggies and heating my food up wherever I could. That was my biggest concern was the nutrition side of this transformation. All you hear is 80% nutrition, 20% working out and you can never outwork a horrible diet. The social aspect of my job and being on overnights, was going to be tough, but I knew the end product would be well worth. Having to weigh myself and take measurements every 2 weeks was helpful because I knew I had to hold myself accountable for my decisions.
I couldn’t and wouldn’t have been able to completely transform my life, cut out the excuses, change my outlook on exercising and gain back confidence if it wasn’t for Kali and Hitch Fit! For those of you getting back into a healthy lifestyle, it doesn’t happen overnight and it won’t happen in a couple of weeks. One thing I learned was to have patience and trust in the process. It can be a slow one, but it will be very rewarding in the end. I cannot wait to continue my fitness journey thanks to Kali!
